An introduction to China

Our first stop after arriving into mainland China was Guangzhou. The capital of the province Guangdong. Everyone basically uses this place as a general stopover as it is one of the main entry/exit points for Hong Kong. We had nothing we really wanted to see or do here but it was Linden’s first time in China so we spent 3 days just checking the place out.

The train ride in was the first realization that we’d stepped into another world. Everyone staring, whispering and even a little boy questioning his mum what the piece of metal was doing in Linden’s lip. Guess they really don’t get too many folk looking like us around their parts.

Time spent in Guangzhou was essentially time spent filling our faces. It’s well known for its Southern Chinese cuisine so a lot of time was spent on the streets sampling food cooked on rows and rows of bbq’s. The seating and tables wouldn’t look out of place at a child’s tea party so we learnt to eat with our knees next to our ears.

The rest of the time was spent in the shopping district which was much like the malls in the city of Perth, just on a larger scale. The streets were closed off to traffic and there were people everywhere, even on a weekday.

Although not necessarily a city on everyones list it did provide a first taste of China and was a very comfortable and somewhat beautiful introduction.

Las Vegas of the East

Macau, known as the Vegas of the East. The place where fat, rich Chinese men flaunt their money and clean air is nonexistent due to the cigar smoke pooling on the ceiling.

Still, the flashy lights and the sound of pokey machines going off does give off an exciting vibe. We only stayed here for the night which to be honest was probably enough unless you’re Donald Trump ballin’. The casinos are intimidating, even more so when every second person stares at you. If you are in Hong Kong at some point, its advisable to add an overnight trip to your agenda.
